Homegrown Ballers: Ashlyn Grant's Ongoing Journey with OUSC and SAIT
For eight years, Ashlyn Grant wore the OUSC badge with pride. First as a dedicated player, now as a passionate coach and student-athlete competing in the ACAC league with SAIT Trojans. What began as a childhood pastime has grown into a lifelong connection built on teamwork, mentorship, and community spirit.
“I played for the club for eight years, and those seasons were some of the most memorable times of my life,” Ashlyn reflected. “Growing up with OUSC helped shape not only my skills as a player but also my love for the game. I met some of my closest friends, learned from incredible coaches, and built countless memories on and off the field. It really became a second home for me.”
That deep-rooted connection to the club is what inspired Ashlyn to stay involved long after her playing days ended. Now in her fourth year of coaching, she’s discovered a whole new side of the sport.
“Transitioning from being a player to a coach has given me a completely new perspective,” she said. “It’s amazing to watch players grow and improve over time, and being part of their journey reminds me of when I was in their shoes.”
When asked why she decided to keep coaching after leaving the pitch, Ashlyn’s answer was simple: giving back.
“I knew I wasn’t ready to step away from the club completely,” she explained. “The environment and people here had such a big influence on me, and I wanted to give something back. Coaching felt like the perfect way to stay involved and help create that same positive, supportive experience for the next generation of players.”
Her time as a summer intern with OUSC also gave her a deeper appreciation for everything that happens off the field. “My experience as a summer intern was eye-opening and so much fun,” she said. “It gave me a chance to see a different side of the club — all the planning, coordination, and behind-the-scenes effort that goes into making everything run smoothly. It made me appreciate how much passion and dedication goes into keeping the club’s culture so strong.”
For Ashlyn, OUSC is far more than just a soccer club.
“The club means everything to me,” she shared. “It’s more than just a place to play soccer — it’s a community that’s helped me grow as both a player and a person. From my first practice to now being a coach, OUSC has always been a source of support, motivation, and friendship. Honestly, I wouldn’t be who I am today without it.”
Now balancing college with her continued involvement in soccer at OUSC and SAIT, Ashlyn is learning valuable lessons about time management and resilience. “Balancing school and soccer definitely has its challenges,” she admitted. “But soccer actually helps me manage the stress of academics — it gives me a mental break and keeps me focused. It’s not always easy, but it’s 100% worth it because I get to keep doing what I love while working toward my degree.”
From player to coach, student to mentor, Ashlyn's story is a testament to OUSC's enduring spirit built on growth, teamwork, and giving back. And as she continues to inspire the next generation of players, it’s clear her journey with the club is far from over.
